What is sustainable Aviation Fuel?

Sustainable Aviation Fuel is a renewable aviation fuel that provides a more sustainable alternative to conventional, fossil-based jet fuel. Neste’s SAF is made from sustainably sourced, 100% renewable waste and residue raw materials, such as used cooking oil and animal fat waste. Neste MY SAF™ is already in production and available to use today. SAF works on current aircrafts as it complies with the same standards as fossil jet fuel, meaning there is no need to design or build new aircraft or set up a parallel fuel infrastructure, as required with hydrogen-powered or electric planes.

How does the Pay-It-Forward initiative work?

When booking, clients are given the opportunity to choose what percentage of their aviation emissions they wish to reduce by purchasing SAF. Then, using the ‘Pay-It-Forward’ concept, Neste calculates how much SAF is needed to equal the emission reduction and distributes the SAF to ensure that a flight, if not theirs, benefits from the carbon emission reduction purchased.

The Bigger Picture

Currently, aviation fuels are petroleum-based or a petroleum and synthetic blend. Petroleum literally means 'rock oil’, it exists in the upper strata of the Earth's crust and has to be drilled for and refined. Despite new technologies working to reduce the ecological repercussions of this process, the impact of burning petroleum still has a very serious impact on global climate change. By purchasing SAF, you are contributing to the widespread adoption of one of the most advanced emission-reduction technologies available, helping to scale a solution which is predicted to play a pivotal role in the decarbonisation of the travel, industry.

About Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™

Neste MY SAF™ is a today solution, commercially available and in use worldwide. SAF is a cleaner, direct replacement for fossil jet fuel and reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 80%* compared to fossil jet fuel. Neste MY SAF™ is currently produced in Porvoo, Finland, and is manufactured from100% renewable waste and residue raw materials, such as used cooking oil, animal fat waste. Prior to use in aircraft, SAF is blended with fossil jet fuel and certified to meet ASTM jet fuel specifications, before being distributed to airports where it is used to fuel aircraft.

Neste only sources renewable raw materials that are traceable and not harmful, enabling them and their partners to monitor the entire supply chain and ensure suppliers’ absolute commitment to strict sustainability criteria. Suppliers must also be committed to combating deforestation, protecting biodiversity, and respecting human rights as defined in Neste’s Supplier Code of Conduct.
