We recognise that travel has an environmental footprint and believe we have a responsibility to reduce that wherever possible. Through our partnership with Pelorus Foundation, we support carefully selected conservation, community and climate initiatives that help address those challenges while creating opportunities for clients to contribute through every journey. Our approach is to continually improve how we operate, invest in emerging solutions and transparently report on our progress.

Every Journey Gives Back

The Climate Investment Fund 

Every Pelorus journey contributes towards creating meaningful environmental and social impact. A 1% contribution from every booking is donated to Pelorus Foundation, supporting conservation, people and climate initiatives around the world.

In addition, clients contribute to our Climate Investment Fund (CIF), which is calculated following their journey based on the carbon emissions generated across the experiences and travel arrangements delivered. This approach ensures contributions accurately reflect the environmental impact of each trip and the number of journeys undertaken.

Rather than treating sustainability as a separate consideration, we have embedded impact into every journey we design. Through Pelorus Foundation and Climate Investment Fund, client contributions help fund selected projects helping support projects that enable travel to contribute to carbon removal, improving rural livelihoods and investing in innovative climate technologies, ensuring travel can play a positive role in protecting the people, places and environments that make exploration possible.

Lowering the Impact of Aviation

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

Aviation remains one of the most challenging aspects of luxury travel to decarbonise. To help address this, Pelorus partners with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) initiatives that support the transition away from traditional fossil-based jet fuel.

 SAF can significantly reduce lifecycle carbon emissions compared to conventional aviation fuel while supporting the development of more sustainable aviation infrastructure for the future.

By opting to include SAF within your booking, you can actively contribute to solutions that help reduce the environmental impact of the flights that make extraordinary travel possible. Clients travelling by private aircraft can also discuss SAF options with our in-house aviation brokers as part of their charter planning. 

This approach allows Pelorus travellers to support tangible climate action while continuing to access the world's most remote and remarkable destinations.

Where Client Contributions Create Impact

Carbon removal

Through Pelorus Foundation and its Climate Investment Fund (CIF), we support a diverse portfolio of carbon removal projects. The funds invest in some of the world’s leading start-up and grassroot projects, showcasing the future of innovative technologies that are encouraging the transition to more permanent carbon storage solutions, as well as supporting communities on the front line of the climate crisis.

From kelp carbon capture in Iceland to enhanced rock weathering in the UK, mangrove restoration in Kenya, regenerative agriculture in Indonesia and soil carbon sequestration in Mongolia. The Climate Investment Fund exists to showcase and scale some of the world’s leading nature, hybrid and technology-led carbon removal solutions through the scale of carbon credits.

Conservation

Pelorus is on a mission to act as a catalyst, empowering individuals and local communities to preserve and protect the world’s wildlife and wild places for future generations. From fighting wildlife crime in the DRC, to protecting pangolins in Southern Africa, and driving sustainable fishing practices in Kenya, Pelorus is collaborating with Pelorus Foundation to provide funding to the local communities protecting and preserving the world’s wildlife and wild places for future generations.

Community

Ensuring that there is a lasting impact not just on the environment, but for the communities that call the destinations we visit home, Pelorus strives to help projects that strengthen local livelihoods, enable economic opportunities and build resilience in communities most affected by climate change.

A portion of these contributions is invested in Plan Vivo-certified projects, an internationally recognised standard for community-led carbon initiatives. By supporting smallholder and subsistence farmers, these projects not only remove carbon from the atmosphere but also provide sustainable sources of income, training and resources to communities on the frontline of the climate crisis.

Example projects

Planting Mangroves in Kenya

Through our planting partners, ACES, we’re supporting the development of two mangrove forests, Mikoko Pamoja and the Vanga Blue Forest. Both are pioneering blue carbon projects, restoring critically important mangrove forests under a community-based management approach.

Protecting pangolins Southern Africa

In the first half of 2019 alone, nearly 200,000 trafficked pangolins were seized by customs officials, driven by a demand for pangolin products which is threatening these unique mammals with extinction.  All eight pangolin species are on the IUCN Red List, threatened with extinction.

The Communities reviving kenyas coast

Kenya’s coast is facing rapid degradation as population growth and poverty have contributed to increases in the number of small-scale fishers. This has, in turn, placed great strain on fish stocks along the coast, resulting in the over-exploitation of fisheries resources.

Pelorus Foundation is the driving force behind much of the impact made possible through Pelorus journeys.

Founded by a group of people who travelled the world and witnessed the widespread damage and destruction of wild places and animals, Pelorus Foundation was born out of an unignorable sense to act now. Established as an independent charity, it aims to empower individuals and local communities to preserve and protect the world for future generations.

Pelorus Foundation identifies, supports and manages a portfolio of high-impact projects across conservation, community development and climate action. Acting as a catalyst for change, the foundation ensures that client contributions are directed towards initiatives capable of delivering measurable and lasting outcomes.
